Important Federal inlaid mahogany Tall Case Clock, dial signed Aaron Willard 1744-1857, Roxbury or Boston, Massachusetts 1800-1810, 93.75"x18.25"x10"
Very fine mahogany Tall Case Clock. This outstanding Clock is circa 1800-1820. It retains a wonderful warm old surface with mahogany panels and string inlay (on bottom panel). The hood is set with a delicate scrolled fret. The painted iron dial is of Boston origin and it features a landscape scene with a moon phase in the lunette. The painted dial is attributed to Aaron Willard & Spencer Nolan, the dial is signed below the calendar, Aaron Willard. This Clock features brass stop fluted columns and ogee bracket feet. The precision eight-day movement is distinguished by having both a deadbeat escarpment while maintaining power. These rare features in addition to the fine old surface and exceptional condition make this a fine example of an Aaron Willard Clock. Minor wear in center panel. The dial has some paint loss on the upper left side, newer screws in brass hinge. Retains the original label on the interior of the door, original finials, weights and pendulum. This Clock is from a prominent Cincinnati family.
