 Fine Chippendale block-front Secretary Desk with wonderful carved broken arch top and carved pediments. This Desk was made in New Hampshire 1780's. The proportions of this Desk are broad and squarish. It is compounded by a broad flat expanse flanking the ogival door panels. The arch adds to the design. Refinished years ago. It was built at Poplin New Hampshire during the winter of 1780's at the house of Enoch Brown by a mechanic who was a British deserter who came to the house and applied for work. Mr. Brown employed him to make the wedding furniture for his daughter Judith Brown who was being married. The wood was from the maple logs on the property. It was made in the big kitchen where he seasoned the wood. The information was written on the side of the interior center drawer. 86"x42.25"x20" (top portion is 10" depth) The hinges have been replaced. The desk is not mahogany, but is maple and possibly birch. |
